Question 1

Are liquor prices the same everywhere in Pennsylvania?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pennsylvania is a control state and the PLCB sets one statewide price per item. A bottle costs the same in Philadelphia as it does in Erie, with only the local sales tax rate differing at the register.

Question 2

What is Chairman's Selection in Pennsylvania?

Accepted Answer

Chairman's Selection is the PLCB's discounted-lot program. The board buys a one-time lot of a specific bottle at a negotiated price and sells it below typical national retail until the lot is gone. It is where the state's best values usually come from.

Question 3

Why is liquor expensive in Pennsylvania?

Accepted Answer

The shelf price includes the state's 18 percent liquor tax, and sales tax is added at checkout. Pennsylvania also does not compete on price the way private retailers do, since every store sells at the same list. The trade-off is that the published price is always the real price.
